What is Tang Soo Do?

Tang Soo Do - The Empty Handed Way

Tang Soo Do has roots in the Korean disciplines of Soo Bahk and Tae Kyun and the Tang Method.  Tang Soo Do has several influences from China and Japan but is mainly from Korea. Tang Soo Do is both a hard (derived from Soo Bahk) and soft style (Northern and Southerns Chinese systems) martial arts and focuses a lot on self defensive technique.

Grand Master Hwan Kee's integration of several martial arts into one is why some of the forms we practice today are more than 500 years old!

Hwa Sun Martial Arts is part of a Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan.

I am Sa Bom Nihm Spratt or Master Spratt.  I have been teaching in one way or another for many, many years.  I can remember teaching tennis and basketball as young as 14 in Sweden where I grew up.  I love teaching but I didn’t know I would end up loving it so much that it became the main part of my life!

Having graduated in 1996 from Thames Valley University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Leisure Management,  I was sure I was going to be working in the Travel and Tourism Industry or at a Theme Park but in my twenties I missed team sports so much and it had been part of my life for many years, that I decided to take on the role as a Group Fitness Instructor.  It was a pivotal time in my life.  I taught part time group fitness classes, anything from six to twelve classes per week and I absolutely loved it.  I also became a Fitness Trainer at around that same time and started working in a gym full time.  I did this for many years until I started my own family.  We also decided to move to America around that same time.  In America I continued teaching for several more years but only one or two classes per week.  Eventually when my second child came along I decided to take a break from teaching fitness but when my son was six years old he said he wanted to do martial arts because it ‘looked cool’.  I thought it would be fun for him too so we went to five different schools and checked them out.  The first four schools were not for us.  When we finally entered Nunan’s Martial Arts we knew we had found the place for us.  It was family oriented and the teacher, SBN Nunan, was very welcoming and also asked if I wanted to try it.  I thought, well why not?  I ended up loving it so much!  I felt empowered and strong and I was training with my young son and my second, youngest son, was watching us on the mat and playing with other kids on the side of the mat.  I have trained for many years with Nunan’s Martial Arts in Cedar Park, TX.

From the very first essay I wrote when I tested for my Orange belt, I mentioned that ‘I could see myself teaching this one day’!  I have been following that path ever since.  As soon as I was a Midnight Blue/Black belt I started to help teaching and sharing my knowledge with others.  I love teaching and helping others and I believe that I am able to share my passion and knowledge to others.  I tested for Kyo Sa Nihm (Certified Instructor) as soon as I could (3rd degree black belt) and eventually (minimum of 13 years training) I tested for Sa Bom Nihm in January 2020.  Alongside of my Master Instructor Certification, I have been working with the after-school program for Nunan’s Martial Arts for several years.  I have gained a lot of knowledge running an after-school program and of the operations for a martial arts school during this process.

It is my hope and dream that Hwa Sun Martial Arts will be a family friendly, martial arts school with its core purpose to share empowerment, positivity, inner strength and physical fitness.
